In Courtland, a man that is currently serving 16 years for charges of child molestation will now have another more than a year added to his sentence. 35 year old Brian Paul Engel will serve an additional year, six months and 30 days for assaulting a deputy and an inmate at Southampton jail.
This week, Judge Robert O'Hara sentenced Engel on a felony charge of assaulting a law enforcement officer and a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery against an inmate.
The assaults allegedly took place in October when an inmate started to antagonize Engel. Engel had been ordered to serve jail time after he was convicted of molesting two girls below the age of 13 several times.
To retaliate against the inmate, Engel took several items from the kitchen, such as water and maple syrup. Engel mixed the liquids together and threw them at the inmate. The substance thrown not only hit the inmate, but also a deputy.
