Gang Member Convicted for Racially Motivated Shooting
This month, a Latino gang member was convicted of first-degree murder in what is believed to be a racially motivated shooting death of a 14-year-old black girl as well as the stabbing death of a potential witness.
According to state prosecutors, defendant Jonathan Fajardo was a member of a Hispanic gang in Los Angeles that is known for targeting members of the black community. For two days, the jury deliberated before finding the defendant guilty of shooting a eighth grader Cheryl Green in a driveway in 2006.
Members of the jury will be asked to recommend whether the 22-year-old should be sentenced to death or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
During interviews with police officers, Fajardo said that the missing gun in the attack could be used against other African Americans, rival gang members or even snitches.
