Man Released After Witnesses Recant Stories
A man who spent twenty years behind bars has been set free after several key witnesses recanted their identification of him.
Francisco "Franky" Carrillo will be released from his Los Angeles prison on Tuesday after a judge overturned his murder conviction last week. He was convicted back in 1991 but always maintained his innocence. The judge reviewing his case heard a week's worth of testimony and examined a reconstruction of the crime scene. He was able to question witnesses based on the reconstruction to see whether they could have properly identified Carrillo.
Of the six witnesses who identified Carrillo twenty years ago, five recanted their stories.
