Police Schedule Southside Checkpoint
Police in Los Angeles will conduct a routine checkpoint for illegal and drunken drivers on the Southside, just one day after they changed their policies to address complaints against them. Complaints have been filed against the LA police about unfairly impounding vehicles driven by sober Latinos who did not have insurance or licenses.
The new policy states that drivers of vehicles who do not have insurance or licenses will be given the chance to have someone else, a legal driver, retrieve the vehicle rather than getting it impounded. This has been a problem in California where already-poor families have their vehicles impounded and then sold off by the state in public auctions. LAPD spokesman Richard French added that "If the registered owner is unlicensed, the owner may authorize release of the vehicle to a licensed driver at the scene, and the unlicensed driver will be issued a citation."
However, if you are caught without a license or insurance and have been drinking, you will not be given the luxury of calling a legal driver.
