Doctor Convicted of Selling Illegal Prescription Drugs
A 72-year-old doctor has been convicted of illegally selling tens of thousands of dangerous painkiller and sedative prescriptions to patients that the doctor never examined. The man reportedly made about $3,000 a day in cash by prescribing controlled substances to phony patients. Most often, the man prescribed Percocet and Xanax and avoided prescribing the painkiller OxyContin because, he claimed, he was afraid of drawing the attention of law enforcement.
The doctor pled guilty to 18 counts of conspiracy and drug charges. The judge ordered him to forfeit his medical license as well as $450,000 in personal funds. The man was also ordered to pay a $125,000 fine.
Prosecutors are disappointed with the sentencing and insist that the doctor should have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. The judge says that he showed the man some leniency due to his age, but a recent article claiming that the doctor might be responsible for three deaths linked to his phony prescriptions has given added credence to the prosecutors' wishes.
