Officers Crack Down on Illegal Prescription Drugs
A recent crackdown on illegal OxyContin providers resulted in the raid of four medical clinics, each of which was found to be operating as a pill mill. The medical clinics catered to addicts seeking the strong painkiller without a prescription. The raid involved support from several branches of government including the IRS and the FBI.
Officials decided to raid these clinics after several overdoses were reported in the area. People suspected of illegal drug possession and the overdose victims were found to have pill bottles from the four raided clinics. Suspicion was also raised when pharmacies in several states issued complaints about the number of prescriptions they were seeing from the clinics.
As a result of the crackdown, $300,000 in cash and 300,000 OxyContin pills were confiscated. Officials suspect that the painkillers were being sold on the black market for anywhere from $30 to $80 per pill. Other painkillers that were illegal distributed at the clinics included codeine and promethazine, a prescription cough medication. The owners of the clinics have been charged with writing illegal prescriptions and various types of medical and financial fraud.
