Police Officer Convicted of Felony Offenses
A police officer has been convicted of fraud, falsely reporting an emergency and several other federal offences after claiming to be shot in his bullet proof vest while on duty. The officer was patrolling a school when he reported that he had been shot by a burglar with a ponytail. The false report led to a school lockdown and a full scale manhunt for the supposed burglar.
The officer apparently made the entire story up in an attempt to collect insurance and workers' compensation. A judge found the officer guilty of felony insurance fraud and workers' compensation fraud in a non-jury trial. The officer was also found guilty of planting false evidence and preparing false documents. Placed on administrative leave following the supposed shooting, officials are now moving to fire the guilty officer. He may be sentenced to up to five years in prison for his crimes.
